I'm slowly wrapping up my strat+tele project (darn it, gonna have taken me two weeks to build them! Accursed weather and work preventing me from working!), just finished carving the necks, and it's got me wondering about what basic dimensions and countours people here use on their instruments. I'm particularly interested in thickness at, say, first and 12th fret, and a description of the back countour. Get an idea of what you folks are building. Personally, I make what I think are medium to large sized, relatively 'full' necks, be they acoustic or electric. Thickness at the nut is usually between .82" and .85" (21-22mm, ish, 1/4" of that fretboard), and a couple of mm thicker at 12th (say, .87-.90", tops). The electrics are about 42-44mm at the nut (Depending), acoustics 45mm (1.75"), usually. My back contours are asymmetrical, with a very 'round' shoulder on the bass side, and a flatter, quasi 'V' slope on the treble side. Similar to what music man does, and/or the Eddie Van Halen/SRV neck carves (Warmoth has pictures of the cross sections if you're having trouble picturing it). Moves the actual peak of the neck slightly towards the bass side, and makes thumb-over playing very comfortable. Doesn't interfere with bar chords, although I tend to make the assymetry less pronounced if I'm building for someone with smaller hands. So, what are your basic dimensions? |

mine are normally pretty thin depending on the customer, but lately I've been doing a lot of necks about .780 thick (including fretboard) with a C shape profile. |

I have four in the shop at the moment: 1) Walnut Tele neck - .830 at first; .930 at 12th C curve 2) Maple Tele neck 1972 - .900 at first; .970 at 12th C curve 3) Maple Strat neck - .850 at first; .880 at 12th C curve 4) Maple Strat neck 1954- Strings are on but curve is more toward V. Although not heavy V. it's a little more round. |

Mattia, .80 first fret, .85 at twelve on the 12-string I'm finishing...the rest of the acoustics are all .77 and .82 Larry |

I shoot for .85 at the first fret and .895 at the 8th fret with a rounded back. Unless otherwise specified |
